Not Guilty Plea in Philippines Massacre | Andal Ampatuan Jr

The mayor of a town in the southern Philippines who is accused in the November massacre of dozens of people pleaded not guilty today to 41 murder charges.

Today was the first day of the trial of the mayor, Andal Ampatuan Jr., whose family has been a close political ally of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Authorities said the massacre in Ampatuan town, in the southern province of Maguindanao, left 57 people dead, making it the worst act of political violence ever in the Philippines. Among the victims were 30 reporters and media workers, the largest number of journalists killed in a single incident.

Prosecutors have filed only 41 cases so far.

Being in Commander - in - Chief of all armed forces of the Philippines, the President may call out the armed forces to prevent or suppress law less violence, invasion or rebellion.
Placing the entire province of Maguindanao under martial rule is the exercise of this power.
But everything GMA does os suspicious. Thus, criticisms on the use of this power to keep sprouting here and there.
A presidentiable acknowledge the need to instill peace and order in Maguindanao. But they are also wary and afraid this could lead to an attemp for charter change. As Congreess would convene to check the legality and validity of the proclamation, people should be on guard to prevent the joint session be possibly used as an opportunity to convene the Consituent Assembly.
Other critics denounced the procalamation as NO BASIS. For there is no invasion or rebellion in Maguindanao.
It is very clear that the problem in Mindanao is a very complex one. The arms - cache found in the Ampatuan Residence is enough proof of a " CLEAR and PRESENT DANGER" which could undermine the place in Mindanao. And most likely it will spread to the rest of the nation.
The solution to this problem lies in how we should elect our next president. A president who is decisive and ready to face challenges in the future.

Election related murders are nothing new in the philippines. Filipinos are noted for that. The world over.

Election in the Philippines has never been an exercise of freedom to choose but " FORCED TO CHOOSE ". Its is because, no matter how lowly a government elective office are in a province, the politicians is always open for violence. Thus, private armies abound. And if a politcian is beholden to the powers that be most likely, the politicians roam freely with a platoon or more tagging along.

After long years of political gimmickry with each other and trying to outdo the other party po;iticians naturally have to resort to violence to intimidate the other party.

The Maguindanao Massacre is a weapon for intimidation. If this goes unchecked, WORLD WAR III would start from there!

Manny Pacquiao boxed and carved a special niche in boxing history at the MGM Grand Garden Arena by outpunching and eventually knocking out technically Miguel Cotto, Puerto Rico's Best.

Many thought that Miguel Cotto will be Pacquiao's toughest challenge when they will meet in this highly anticicapted fight for welterweight title. They were all wrong.

When Pacquiao trained there were distractions. There was typhoon Ondoy. There were times during training period that Paquiao went to the extent of helping hte victims of typhoon Ondoy by handing the donations himself to the victims. There was that shooting for a movie and many other forms of distractions.

But when Pacquiao trained it was as if he is preparing to entertain everyone. He worked hard everyday.

Fight time came and Pacquiao once more showed to the world what the filipino was capable of. Cotto, who seemed indestructible due to his fearsome fight record and physique, wilted under Pacman's heavy bombs and precisioned - artillery. Cotto managed only to win the opening round but the second to the 12th round Pacquiao was in command of the fight. It was target - shooting. Pacquiao almost hit at will. The artillery was there. The bombs were there. And Pacman's Machin gun did the rest. And Cotto like the rest - suffered his second defeat. To a filipino, whom many thought could not stand a chance against him.

Boxing is alive again!!!

There have been wild talks of an impending Mayweather - Pacman bout. But from the looks of it before the Cotto fight - he seemed to avoid the Filipino Fighter. Now that Pacman is the welterweight King and has proven to all and sundry that he deserves to be called the " Best Pound for Pound Boxer " for this year, can Mayweather ever dream of fighting PACMAN? or would the win over Cotto make Juan Manuel Marquez scared of?

Maybenot. Would hit - and - run tactics of Mayweather and his enormous ring savvy save Money from Manny Pacquiao's bombs artiller and Machine guns? Would Marquez's counter - punching be a factor if evenn there will be a next fight?

Taking from the pass elections we had, people now have learned a bitter lesson. People, more or less, now understand what elections are for.

This has been considered part of the game, provided you do not get caught and if caught you are prepared to defend yourself in court.
Filipinos know cheating during election. this is a fact of life. this usurps the popular will which is the very essence of a democartic institution.
Automated election is the asnwer to this. But even if there is an automated election, automated cheating is still possible.
In some areas in the country, voters have never seen even a calculator much less a computer. And cecause there is now automation in our election, people have to deal with a new type of machine. A machine that swallows their ballots, makes a score and piles up the score needed for the municipal, provincial and national canvass.
Is the computerized voting procedure easy? In some areas in the philippines, electricity is lacking and maybe no transmission signals. Would automation be still possible?
When automation takes place, filipnos will no longer witness the reading of the ballots and the scores in the blackboard. After the voting, filipinos have tocontend going to their homes in the evening not knowing who won the elections.
Will automation provide us filipinos more faith or revitalized faith in out electoral process?
We will try to answer this in 2010!

The Calamities in the eyes of a Presidentiable in the Philippines

People would naturally shudder at the thought of an impending calamity. Politicians, however, think that an impending calamity is an impending chance to showcase thier pro-people stance.

At the height of Typhoon Ondoy, no politicians were in sight. They were either too busy trying to secure themselves and the rest of the members of thier families, or they are just busy preparing everything up that when the typhoon shall have left each would have be ready with their political gimmickry.

Politicians welcome calamities. Calamities are chances of showing thier " CaRe" for the people. Eventhough some thinks that this is only for a time being. Neverthless, calamities give politicans chances " to manifest" their "care", their " love ", their charitable prowess and the opportunity to let the people see their ( politicians ) " REAL " selves into casting thier votes for them should election time comes.

Program of governments in politicians are not anymore looked at by people. It is the politicans' capability to " shower the people their care when care is needed " , that counts most.

People look at the capabilities of the politicians' pockets when people demands help from them.

Calamities are showers of blessings for politicians, therefore!!!

..... are politicians people? if they are, then calamities would wreak havoc in their minds and hearts and their pockets!
